Step 2: Find Underperforming Content

Not all low-traffic posts deserve deletion. Some are new. Some target low-volume keywords intentionally. Some serve as supporting cluster content for a pillar page. You need a framework to separate true underperformers from intentional low-traffic pages.

The Four Types of Underperforming Content

1. Content decay. Posts that used to rank but are losing traffic. Check your Google Search Console data month over month. Look for posts with declining impressions and clicks. These are prime candidates for a content refresh.

2. Thin content. Posts under 500 words with no clear value proposition. Google has explicitly stated that thin content is a quality issue. These posts rarely rank and rarely help users.

3. Keyword cannibalization. Multiple posts targeting the same keyword. They compete against each other instead of working together. Backlinko fixed cannibalization on 2 competing articles and saw a 466% increase in clicks within 8 weeks. Use Google Search Console to find URLs that rank for the same queries.

4. Orphan pages. Posts with zero internal links pointing to them. Google discovers content through links. If no page links to a post, it may never get crawled or indexed properly.

How to Spot Decay in Google Search Console

  1. Open the Performance report.
  2. Set the date range to “Compare” and select last 90 days vs. previous 90 days.
  3. Filter by “Pages” and sort by “Clicks difference.”
  4. Look for pages with significant negative click differences.
  5. Check if the decline is steady (decay) or sudden (algorithm hit or seasonality).

Steady decline over 6+ months is content decay. Sudden drops may indicate a Google update or technical issue.

Step 4: Map Topic Gaps Across the Buyer Journey

Keyword gaps show you what search terms you are missing. Topic gaps show you what subject areas you have not covered at all. A topic gap is broader than a keyword gap. It is an entire area of expertise your blog ignores.

Most blogs over-index on awareness-stage content. They publish “what is” and “how to” posts but neglect the middle and bottom of the funnel. Map your existing content to these stages:

Format Gaps to Watch For

Comparison queries (“X vs Y”) need tables, not essays. Readers want side-by-side feature comparisons. A 2,000-word narrative about two tools will lose to a clean comparison table every time.

Best list queries (“best X for Y”) need structured lists with clear criteria. Numbered lists with feature breakdowns outperform unstructured paragraphs.

How-to queries need step-by-step instructions with clear headers. Numbered steps, screenshots, and checklists match search intent better than explanatory prose.

Data queries need original research or curated statistics. If you are not publishing data, you cannot compete for queries like “X statistics 2026.”

AI Visibility Gaps

In 2026, format gaps include AI citation readiness. AI search engines extract answers from content with specific structures: clear definitions at the top, scannable bullet points, direct answers to questions, and original data. If your content is structured as long narrative prose, AI systems will skip it in favor of content they can parse easily.


Step 6: Check for Internal Linking Gaps

Internal links are the connective tissue of your blog. They distribute authority, guide users through your content, and help Google understand your site structure. Most blogs have severe internal linking gaps.

The Three Internal Linking Gaps

1. Orphan pages. Posts with no internal links pointing to them. These pages struggle to rank because Google has no path to discover them. Use Screaming Frog to find pages with zero inlinks.

2. Cluster disconnections. Pillar pages that do not link to their cluster posts, or cluster posts that do not link back to the pillar. This breaks the topic cluster model and weakens topical authority signals.

3. Missing contextual links. Posts that mention a topic you have covered elsewhere but do not link to it. Every mention of a covered topic is a missed opportunity to pass link equity and keep users on your site longer.

  1. Crawl your site with Screaming Frog.
  2. Export the “Inlinks” report for all blog posts.
  3. Sort by inlink count, lowest to highest.
  4. For posts with fewer than 3 internal links, find relevant pages that could link to them.
  5. For posts with more than 50 internal links, check if the links are relevant or just navigation noise.

Pages with 40 to 44 internal links get 4x more Google traffic than pages with fewer than 5. But after 45 to 50 links, traffic starts to decline. The sweet spot is 8 to 15 contextual internal links per post.

An audit without execution is just a spreadsheet. The final step is turning your findings into a concrete action plan with owners, deadlines, and success metrics.

Update vs. Rewrite vs. Consolidate vs. Delete

Rewrite when the post targets the right keyword but the content is thin, outdated, or mismatched to search intent. Keep the URL if it has backlinks. Change the URL only if the keyword target changes significantly.

Consolidate when you have 2 or more posts targeting the same keyword or covering the same topic. Merge the best content from each into one complete post. Redirect the old URLs to the new one with 301 redirects.

Delete when the post gets zero traffic, has zero backlinks, targets no meaningful keyword, and serves no business purpose. Use a 410 status code and remove it from your sitemap.
